While you’re here, you won’t want to miss –
It’s hard to find words to do justice to Queenstown. Simply, it’s a spectacular lake and mountain resort with a mind-boggling list of must-do activities, as well as being a top food and wine destination.
You’ll find there’s something for everyone to enjoy in our suggestions for the top things to do in Queenstown on your vacation.
Range of Activities
Queenstown has an incredible range of activities. For adrenaline junkies, there is New Zealand’s highest bungy jump or the world’s highest cliff jump … no?
Then perhaps you prefer jetboating, white-water rafting or sledging the rapids. From June to early October, the skiers and snowboarders arrive en masse to enjoy the snow and socializing.
For those who prefer the more contemplative sports, there are plenty to choose from:
- Anglers can choose between fly fishing, spin fishing, drift fishing, and winter fly fishing, with lessons for beginners or those in need of a few tips.
- Walkers and bicyclists can follow trails that start at the town center – or head out to explore the back country.
- If you aspire to greater heights, try heli-biking or take the gondola to Bob’s Peak for the Bike Park with 14 world-class mountain bike trails.
- Or unwind at the spectacular golf courses in the region – although the spectacular surrounds may make concentration a little difficult.
The majestic mountains and stunning lake scenery make helicopter and plane flights a never-to-be-forgotten occasion. If you’d like to make aerial sight-seeing a little more adventurous, opt for an aerobatic flight, parapenting, sky diving or just floating in a hot air balloon.
The vintage steamship, TSS Earnslaw, cruises Lake Whakatipu and provides a number of options, from onboard dining to an activity-filled day at Walter Peak, a high country farm and a unique rural paradise.
Prefer to get away from the tourists? A scenic helicopter flight followed by a mountaintop picnic will get you off on your own.
A choice of Lord of The Rings tours – by horse, 4WD vehicle or plane – provide adventures into the surrounding areas to experience why Peter Jackson chose this region for many of his movie scenes.
Queenstown’s crystalline skies provide the perfect star-gazing experience at Skyline, a specially constructed outdoor area where views of the sky are provided by two portable high-powered Celestron telescopes.
Goose down jackets are provided! High above the gondola and surrounded by snow-capped peaks, visitors can view the galaxy in an area totally free of artificial light. A star-gazing expert will help interpret the constellations – altogether an amazing experience not found in many other parts of the world and high on the list of things to do in Queenstown.
It’s hard to choose when faced with such a vast range of eateries – from cafes to steak houses to fine dining restaurants. Queenstown’s reputation as a paradise for food-lovers was established by the Lonely Planet guide, when they declared it a top destination.
Try the Botswana Butchery, with a strong emphasis on locally sourced ingredients, or The Cow, specializing in hand-made pizzas, spaghetti and bread. For a different ambiance and pace, try Minami Jujisei, an award-winning Japanese restaurant. Ask at the i-SITE center for the newest and best restaurant offerings.
Pair your meal with a glass or two of the fine Pinot Noir from nearby wineries.
If you’re looking for lighter fare, head to Fergberger. You’ll know you’ve found it by the long line that extends into the street. Acclaimed by burger-lovers as the best burgers on the planet, you’ll face a tough choice with the massive variety – including pork belly, blue cod, Bambi and tofu along with more traditional burger types.
And after all this activity? There’s nothing better than being pampered. Find balm for the body and soul at therapeutic day spas, or the hot pools located at the base of the Coronet Ski Field.
For your ultimate indulgence, have us include a wine and spa whole day experience consisting of a morning’s pampering, followed by a wine trail in the afternoon on your New Zealand vacation. A good night’s sleep is guaranteed!
Although Queenstown caters for large numbers of tourists, we can guide you to many things to do in out-of-the way places for individual experiences beyond the ordinary. It’s a beautiful area filled with never to be forgotten experiences for those who take the time to search them out.
